Wet dreams or nocturnal emissions are the produce of the younger male, really, but they can occur at all ages of a man's life. Certainly the erections that precede an wet dream are a normal part of all men's lives, unless they have an erectile dysfunction (impotence) problem that is physically-based. Most erections during sleep occur in the early hours of the morning when the testosterone levels in our blood is highest:. But why would an erection be followed by a nocturnal ejaculation? The most obvious reason is that a young man has such a high level of sexual arousal that even teenage masturbation cannot keep up with his sexual drive. Another reason may be that he has in fact not yet learnt to masturbate, and the body is discharging excess sexual fluid in his sleep. Actually, I don't buy this, because if that were true, wet-dreams would happen at all ages when men were sexually inactive. The truth seems to be that it is more closely related to testosterone levels, which appear to be at their highest in young men, and decline steadily as a man ages. Dreams about sex with close relatives are not uncommon: sons, for example, may dream of sex with their dads, mother, brothers or sisters, and feel very guilty about it. But all this represents is the confusion of sex and love in a young mind, a distinction which hopefully will become clearer as the young man grows up and learns about clear boundaries around appropriate sexual behavior from adults who can set a good example. A point which it is important to keep in mind, I think, is that a fantasy life is just that. It doesn't have to be acted on, and it can be kept private.
